LSU football head coach Brian Kelly confirmed Friday that Ju’Juan Johnson will remain at running back for now.

The sophomore took snaps at quarterback, which he played in high school, earlier this offseason but will play running back for the foreseeable future. The Tigers are dealing with depth issues in the backfield and need Johnson to get the work.

Johnson’s move comes after four-star freshman running back JT Lindsey was suspended and Trey Holly left LSU to enroll at Southern. That left LSU with just three scholarship running backs: Caden Durham, Kaleb Jackson, and Harlem Berry. Johnson gives LSU reasonable depth, putting the Tigers back at four scholarship running backs.

Johnson signed with LSU as a four-star prospect in the 2024 class. He was originally recruited as a defensive back. LSU put him at running back early as a freshman. He took just seven carries for 14 yards and added five receptions for 22 yards and a touchdown.

LSU included Johnson in wildcat formations as the quarterback earlier this offseason, as the position group struggled with depth and needed a speedy athlete like Johnson. He continues to be a versatile team player.
