Navy, Army and Air Force were among the college football programs recruiting rising Middletown senior receiver Clinton Lee.
The military appealed to Lee, partly because his mother, Janet, had served in the Air Force, so his college choice wasn’t a shock.
Lee committed to play at Navy on June 14. He thought Navy had an offense that suited him well, plus he liked the non-football opportunities he’d get at the school. And there was another factor.

While Lee’s history in Annapolis was hinged on happenstance, his future there is the result of determination and effort that helped him develop into a Division I prospect.
Last season, Lee emerged as a big-play receiver whose ability to snag passes from fellow junior Britt Poffenbarger proved to be a major asset for a Knights team that reached the Class 2A-1A state semifinals, where they lost to Patuxent.
Standing 6-foot-3, weighing 200 pounds and possessing speed that made him a threat on kickoff returns, Lee was a handful for defensive backs tasked with covering him. He could run by them, find open spaces or battle for contested catches.
Ranking among Frederick County’s receiving leaders all season, Lee finished with 29 catches for 834 yards (28.8 yards per reception) and 12 touchdowns and earned Frederick News-Post All-County first-team honors.
Rather than be content with such numbers, Lee has been expanding his capabilities as a receiver by working on crisp route running, packing on more muscle and adding to his football IQ.
Lee said he’d be a mix of snipe and receiver in Navy’s triple option offense.
“I feel like the position that they’re going to have me in, it suits me…
