Virginia Tech football recruiting: 4-star OT Thomas Wilder commits to Hokies

The Virginia Tech Hokies kicked off the upcoming holiday weekend in style, landing a commitment from four-star offensive tackle Thomas Wilder.

Wilder chose the Hokies over his other finalists: Penn State, Maryland and North Carolina. Wilder had an impressive offer list. The 6-foot-6, 295-pound offensive tackle continues Tech’s recent success at Green Run High School in Virginia Beach. The 2026 recruiting class now features Wilder, cornerback Zaevion Cleveland and edge rusher Kamren Johnson from Green Run. Already in Blacksburg from Green Run are wide receiver Keylen Adams, cornerback Knahlij Harrell, defensive lineman Zeke Chinwike and wide receiver Jayden Anderson.

Wilder explained why he chose the Hokies in this interview with Kolby Crawford of 247Sports.

Wilder said Blacksburg always felt like home, and the Hokies have been recruiting him for years. Relationships with head coach Brent Pry and especially offensive line coach Matt Moore helped seal the deal for Virginia Tech. Moore is in his first year for the Hokies, but had been recruiting Wilder for years from his time at West Virginia. He’s the third offensive tackle already in Tech’s 2026 class, joining Buddy Wegdam and Tyrell Simpson. The Hokies are a finalist for their top interior target, Adrian Hamilton, who also decides this weekend. Virginia Tech is considered the favorite for Hamilton.

This is a significant addition for the Hokies. Wilder had several good options, and he decided that Blacksburg was the place for him. Relationships were huge in his recruitment. Much like Wegdam and Simpson, Wilder doesn’t project to move inside at the next level. He already has the size to play immediately once he arrives on campus. Wilder is athletic, possesses outstanding length and is a powerful force in the run game.

Welcome home, Thomas.
