Texas A&M is a one-of-a-kind university, rich in tradition and supported by an extremely loyal fan base, especially when it comes to football. The excitement is always in the air, and the Aggie faithful can’t wait to pack Kyle Field, as season tickets have sold out for the third consecutive year.
Outside of Aggieland, the common knock is that the football team and its fans get hyped during the off-season only to finish 8-4 and head to a bowl game nobody’s ever heard of. And if we’re being honest, that criticism—cringeworthy as it may be at times—has some truth to it.
However, for the first time in over a decade, the Aggie football program has a coach who not only teaches responsibility and accountability, but lives by it. After a promising start to the 2024 season, aided by a favorable schedule, A&M stumbled to an embarrassing three-game losing streak to close out coach Mike Elko’s inaugural season as head coach.
Following the bowl game loss against a depleted USC Trojan squad, a visibly frustrated Elko voiced his disappointment in the defensive effort. During the offseason, he followed up by committing to a more active role in the defensive game plan and bringing in Lyle Hemphill for an extra set of eyes.
These moves, coupled with an elite start to the 2026 recruiting class—currently ranked in the top five across major publications—and a veteran roster, have inspired optimism about where this program is headed.
Admittedly, a tougher schedule makes an 8-4 finish feel reasonable. But the difference now is the culture being built at Texas A&M. As long as the team wins the games it should and remains competitive, Coach Elko will be given a bit of grace.
