LSU football was name-dropped at Big 12 Media Days on Tuesday when Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire was on the mic.
McGuire referenced Brian Kelly’s comments from the SEC meetings in May, where Kelly proposed that the SEC play nine conference games along with one opponent from the Big Ten annually. McGuire wants in on the action.
“I saw Brian Kelly say he’d love to play a Big 10 team. Hey man, I would love to play LSU, home and home series,” McGuire said.
McGuire’s comments come as the Big 12 is looking to make its case to belong at the top of college football. At times this offseason, the Big Ten and SEC have pushed for more automatic bids to the College Football Playoff. The SEC has since backed off some of those proposals.
“Let’s decide it on the field. If we’re sitting here talking about the playoffs, if you win the conference championship, you should be in the playoffs. And then it’s one of the deals, I know you said it a couple years ago, to where we all of a sudden now have cross-conference games and we’re playing each other. I think that’d be a great way to do it,” McGuire said.
LSU and Texas Tech last met in 2015, when LSU got the best of Patrick Mahomes and the Red Raiders in the Texas Bowl.
