Houston HC Willie Fritz is ‘very fortunate’ to have QB Conner Weigman

Former Texas A&M quarterback Conner Weigman never lived up to his five-star recruiting billing during his three seasons with the Aggies, primarily due to injury issues, which included missing all but three games during the 2023 season.

In 2024, Weigman entered the season as the starter. Still, a shoulder injury, combined with a lack of reliable receiving options, led to the rise of current starting quarterback Marcel Reed, which ultimately led to the redshirt sophomore entering the transfer portal. After less than a month, Weigman decided to head back home, as the Cypress (TX) native committed to Houston and quickly earned the starting QB job this offseason.

Completely healthy, Weigman is now back to his 2022 playing weight, with more muscle on his frame, and is reportedly highly confident that his elite play during his prolific high school career will return in 2025. Weigman is no stranger to the Cougars, starting with his father, Chad Weigman, a Houston graduate, who used to attend Houston games with the pair during Conner’s early years.

This week, the Big 12 football media days featured Houston head coach Willie Fritz, who took the stand on Wednesday to discuss his expectations in 2025, starting with his excitement for what he believes could be Conner Weigman’s best season yet.

“He’s been outstanding” Fritz stated. “Conner is from Houston, Five-Star, played high school ball there, and had a little bit of an up and down career at Texas A&M.”

Up and down is an understatement, but again, this isn’t all Weigman’s fault. Fritz was right to point out that the sudden coaching changes after Jimbo Fisher’s firing just weeks before the conclusion of the 2023 season led to current OC Collin Klein entering the program; however, his scheme did not fit Weigman’s ability as well as Marcel Reed’s.
