Patriots QB Maye stops in Londonderry for youth football camp

LONDONDERRY — Drake Maye was once just like the hundreds of young New Hampshire football players with whom he spent Thursday playing backyard football.

The 22-year-old New England Patriots starting quarterback stopped at Londonderry High School to hold one of his three summer youth football camps for players ages 6-16.

Growing up in Huntersville, North Carolina, Maye attended football camps held by Carolina Panthers players. His favorite NFL player as a kid was former Panthers and Patriots quarterback Cam Newton.

“I was a wannabe quarterback,” Maye said of what he was like as a player back then, “and it ended up turning out alright. I loved coming to camps like that. … Just knowing that one of these kids could be me and I see a lot of my jerseys, so it’s pretty cool being out here.”

The Londonderry camp was organized by FlexWork Sports Management and sponsored by Raising Cane’s, Vitamin 1 and TruFit Customs.

Londonderry High athletic director and football coach Jimmy Lauzon said that FlexWork reached out to him to set up the camp. Lauzon then got the event approved by the school district and the town.

Lauzon said about 450 kids signed up for the camp, which was Maye’s only stop in New Hampshire this summer. The other two camps were scheduled for Friday in Auburn, Mass., and Foxborough, Mass.

“Our school district and our school board are incredibly supportive,” Lauzon said, “and they saw it as a great opportunity for the school, the community and athletics. Just grateful that they gave us the chance.”

Lauzon and Manchester Central coach Ryan Ray were both on hand at the camp.

Many Londonderry football players helped coach drills.

Lancers senior defensive back J-veion Teeter was one of the players helping Maye run his seven-on-seven backyard football drill.
