Rutgers Linebacker Sam Pilof Medically Retires from Football

Rutgers Football linebacker Sam Pilof announced on Thursday morning that he is medically retiring from the game of football. Pilof is a 6-foot-3, 230 pound linebacker from Middleton, Wisconsin, who was set to enter his second season at Rutgers this fall.

According to the Rutgers On3 site, Pilof is going to remain with the program to assist in the weight room while he earns his degree. He plans to pursue a career revolving around strength and conditioning.

Coming out of high school, Pilof was a highly sought after three star recruit who attracted significant attention from Iowa, Penn State, and Wisconsin before ultimately deciding to commit to the Scarlet Knights. He was rated as the No.15 overall recruit in Wisconsin and was a top 150 linebacker in the class of 2024.

Pilof, despite not seeing action his freshman year, was expected to be a depth piece at linebacker for the Knights this season, with Moses Walker assuming the starting role next to Darial Djabome.

Pilof’s retirement, along with Mohamed Toure entering the transfer portal and Tyreem Powell leaving for the NFL, leaves Rutgers with 10 scholarship linebackers on the team. 7 out of those 10 are redshirt freshmen or true freshmen who haven’t played one down of college football. It was expected that the Knights would heavily target linebackers in the portal, but that would not be the case, as they did not make any additions to the position.
