Elko opens Aggies’ SEC media days with hilarious opening statement

The DJ at the Southeastern Conference media days made sure to double-check his soundtrack before playing the “Aggie War Hymn” as second-year Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko walked to the podium Thursday afternoon.

Following the blunder in which Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian was introduced with the Aggies’ fight song blaring over the speakers, everyone present at the media days in Atlanta, Georgia, held their collective breath in hopes of another blooper. Whoever was controlling the music behind the scenes did not oblige those seeking “The Eyes of Texas” as Elko walked to the stage to preview the upcoming season for his 2025 Aggie football team.

The media members in attendance instead received something even more hilarious to cap a packed week of interviews and pageantry. As Elko approached the microphone with the Texas A&M and SEC logos prominently displayed, he began his introduction by addressing the Sark blunder.

“For all of you who had ‘The Eyes of Texas’ playing when I came out, you lost your bet,” Elko said.

The final day of “talking season” provided a much-needed light-hearted joke before the serious discussions and questions began. Texas A&M’s rivalry with Texas continues to add memes and moments that only fuel the hatred heading into this year’s campaign.

Last year’s 17-7 victory in favor of Texas marked the first matchup between the two programs since 2011. Fans, players and coaches picked up right where the Lone Star Showdown left off, however.
