Clemson football has ‘National Championship’ expectations in 2025

Clemson football isn’t sneaking up on anyone this year. The Tigers enter 2025 with the kind of national buzz that suggests anything short of a national title might be seen as a disappointment—and that’s exactly how Dabo Swinney likes it.

Despite questions in recent years about whether Clemson had slipped from the top tier of college football, the Tigers reminded everyone last season why the bar remains so high. They won another ACC championship, returned to the College Football Playoff, and now find themselves right back in the title conversation.

At the 2025 ACC Football Kickoff in Charlotte, Swinney was asked what it says about the program that “championship or bust” has essentially become the expectation.

“Well, I think we’ve earned that through consistency,” Swinney said.

He pointed to 14 straight seasons with at least nine wins—a streak matched by only three other programs in major college football history. Of those, 13 included double-digit wins, tying Clemson with Alabama for the most 10-win seasons since 2011.

Swinney also highlighted off-field consistency, from academic performance to player retention in an era defined by the transfer portal.

“We’re purpose driven, we’re relationship driven, and we’ve created a ton of consistency,” he said. “Not just in winning, but in how we’ve done it.”
