South Carolina football will have a new face on the sideline this season, and it’s one longtime college football fans will likely recognize.

The program is adding coach Geoff Collins to its staff as a senior defensive assistant, South Carolina announced in a news release July 27.

Collins, who has 28 years of coaching experience at the college football level, was the defensive coordinator on Mack Brown’s North Carolina staff in 2024. He also had head coaching stints at Temple and Georgia Tech.

The release highlights Collins’ recruiting acumen, noting his back-to-back top-25 classes at Georgia Tech, high marks for a program that generally doesn’t attract top-flight talent.

Collins joins the defensive staff in Clayton White’s fifth season as the South Carolina defensive coordinator. The Gamecocks were 16th in the country in total defense last year, allowing 316.6 yards per game en route to a 9-4 (5-3 SEC) record and a trip to the Citrus Bowl.

South Carolina opens its season Aug. 31 against Virginia Tech.
