Paul Finebaum makes bold prediction about North Carolina joining the SEC

Last week during SEC Media Days, a story came out that the North Carolina Tar Heels are looking to leave the ACC and join the SEC.

Monday on the McElroy and Cubic Show, ESPN’s Paul Finebaum makes this prediction about the Tar Heels joining the SEC.

“It sounds very much to me like people close to North Carolina are floating this out there, probably frustrated with their current position,” said Finebaum. “Even though the ACC is now singing kumbaya, we all know there are a lot of anxious schools in there.”

Outside of North Carolina, several other ACC may be looking to make the jump too, including Florida State, Clemson, and maybe Miami.

The rumor mill had the SEC may be adding not only North Carolina, but Clemson, Virginia, and Florida State.

Finebaum believes it’s just a matter of time before the Tar Heels join the SEC.

“I think ultimately it’s going to happen,” Finebaum predicted. “Once we get to this next iteration, North Carolina has always been the No. 1 choice of many people in SEC circles. I think the bigger question is when exactly does it happen, and secondly, who would their drafting partner be?”

North Carolina may be a perfect fit for the conference. They have an up-and-coming football program for years, a good baseball program, and, of course, their basketball program would be an excellent fit for a conference that had most teams in the NCAA Tournament.

The primary reason the Tar Heels want to join is more revenue and a foot in the door with the College Football Playoff. The ACC did not have a good showing in the CFP last year despite having two teams get in over SEC teams.

If Finebaum is right, it’s just a matter of time before the SEC expands again.
