Local stars drawing college interest ahead of 2025 football season

Jul. 30—The football offseason is coming to a close, and it has been a productive one for several local stars.

The offseason, in particular the summer, provides players not only the chance to lift weights, condition and compete in 7-on-7s and OTAs with their teams, but also the opportunity to attend camps at colleges. It's here that players can get the attention of college coaches and hopefully even land offers.

Here are some of the players who have landed Division I offers heading into the seasons:

Xavier Edwards, Athens senior running back

Xavier Edwards transferred from East Limestone to Athens prior to last season and immediately made an impact with 1,166 combined offensive yards and 17 total touchdowns, while sharing the backfield with DeMarcus Malone (629 yards, 10 TDs), who is also back this season. Edwards has had a big offseason, picking up offers from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the University of North Alabama, and is poised for a big senior season.

Harris Penley, Decatur senior offensive lineman

Last year was a tough one for the Decatur Red Raiders, specifically the offensive line. The Red Raiders finished 2-8 and the offensive line, which featured three sophomores, took its lumps. That group, led by Harris Penley, is expected to be much improved this season with four starters and is a big reason why the Red Raiders have plenty of optimism headed into 2025. Penley has been hard at work this offseason, camping at schools such as Memphis and Jacksonville State and picking up an offer from the University of Texas at El Paso.

MaCarri Johnson, West Morgan senior running back
