Hugh Freeze says some Auburn players spend more time on social media than sleeping

Over the years, social media has become a big deal, especially in college football.

Not only do players tweet, but coaches like Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin tweet as well.

But one coach has had enough of all of it, and that is Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze.

Freeze went on a tirade about his players being on social media too much.

“I told them last night one of the things I’m convinced of is that we have too many men that spend more time scrolling than they do sleeping,” Hugh Freeze said in his first news conference of the season. “And it is a mental battle. And it’s a mental game.

The culture right now at Auburn is under scrutiny in recent weeks because of the arrest of several high-profile players, and Freeze has come under some criticism for his golf outings, while other coaches have been on the recruiting trail.

Freeze is trying to get the culture of the program back on track, but it’s a challenge.

“Yeah, I think that’s every coach’s challenge right now,” Freeze said. “And the ones, once you get a depth chart that is close to equal to those that you’re playing, I do think culture and chemistry will make a difference. That’s something we work hard at and are very, very transparent with, that I’m not naive.”

Another thing Freeze addressed was the handling of his new starting quarterback, Jackson Arnold. He says his main priority right now is to protect his QB while building his confidence.

“The number one priority of practice is for our quarterback to leave that field confident,” he said. 

That comment raised a few eyebrows when he said that, but it’s understandable because the quarterback room right now is not very deep, so losing Arnold, especially at the beginning of fall camp, would be a huge blow for a team trying to climb its way back to the…
