Iowa football punter Rhys Dakin named to Ray Guy Award Watch List

One of Iowa’s favorite pastimes may be corn, but it is also the art of punting. No one does it better, or maybe more often and successfully, than the Iowa Hawkeyes.

With a long lineage of strong punters that Iowa can rely on to pin teams deep, it has gone from a wasted play of giving the other team the ball to a play that truly helps the Hawkeyes win games.

The 2025 Hawkeyes once again will trot out one of the nation’s best punters on fourth down this season, and after last year’s success, he has proven to be a valuable weapon.

That punter is Rhys Dakin, the Aussie, and he is among those included in the Ray Guy Award Watch List, an award for the nation’s best punter.

Rhys Dakin punted for Iowa last year and was called upon 64 times during the season. He averaged 44.1 yards per punt with a long that went a booming 61 yards. He dropped 29 of his punts inside the opponents’ 20-yard line, giving the Hawkeyes’ defense the entire field to work with.

Dakin hails from Melbourne, Australia, where he played Australian rules football before making the move to the United States to join Iowa.
