GAYLORD ― It’s finally August, which means high school football season is right around the corner.
In a few short weeks, players will be hitting the turf around the state of Michigan, with games set to begin on Thursday, Aug. 28. All three Gaylord area teams will be at home to start the season, with Gaylord hosting North Branch, Johannesburg-Lewiston hosting Burton-Bendle and Gaylord St. Mary hosting Rudyard.
With each new season comes new names and faces to be aware of, and fans of Gaylord-area teams will become quite aware of that as all three teams will be breaking in new quarterbacks while new playmakers on offense and defense will hope to mesh with the returning starters.
Each team has a couple of players we think it’s worth keeping an eye on with football right around the corner:
Gaylord
Jaron Bensinger, linebacker
The Bensinger name should be familiar to Gaylord fans; Jaron’s older brother, Ty Bensinger, was a state champion wrestler and all-state football player during his time as a Blue Devil. Jaron joined Ty on Gaylord’s Wall of Champions after winning the D2, 144-pound wrestling state title at Ford Field in Detroit back in March. Now, he looks to live up to his brother’s name on the turf as well.
Bensinger was a second-team All-Big North linebacker last season and will likely be the leader of the defense in 2025, a unit that allowed just 16.2 points per game in 2024 despite the team’s 3-6 overall record.
