Monster of Tennessee’s linebacker unit detailed ahead of 2025 season

Edwin Spillman enters his second season at Tennessee in 2025.

The 6-foot-1, 230-pound redshirt freshman appeared in four games for the Vols, earning a redshirt, in 2024. He received playing time against Kent State, Oklahoma, Vanderbilt and Ohio State.

Spillman recorded six tackles in 2024 and played a season-high 25 defensive snaps at Ohio State in the College Football Playoff first round.

Following Tennessee’s third practice in fall training camp ahead of the 2025 campaign, second-year linebackers coach William Inge discussed Spillman’s growth and expectations for his role as a redshirt freshman.

“Edwin would be what you would call, the monster of the room because he doesn’t have to speak a lot, because you have Arion (Carter) and (Jeremiah) Telander there,” Inge said. “When he does speak, he is very active, and he is someone who is, literally, biting the heels off of those guys when it comes to his performance, his actions, his leadership and his trust level. He is someone that we have a high regard for when it comes to putting him on the football field.”
