Who will replace Alabama football punter James Burnip? What Jay Nunez said

Who replaces former Crimson Tide punter James Burnip has been one of the most burning, but least discussed, questions of the offseason for Alabama football.

At media day Monday, special teams coordinator Jay Nunez didn’t hesitate to answer the status of a battle that’s been dominated by freshman Alex Asparuhov and redshirt senior Blake Doud.

“They’re all right there. I’d say Blake’s probably had the best overall camp,” Nunez said of the Colorado School of Mines transfer.

In his fourth and final season at the Colorado School of Mines, Doud was named the RMAC Special Teams Player of the Year and a D2CCA First Team All-Super Region 4 honoree, leading all Division II punters with an average 46.6 yards per punt and helped Mines lead DII in net punting at 42.8 yards per boot. As a redshirt junior, he nailed a career-long 80-yarder.

“And then Alex has been right there, and then even Anderson Green, as a local walk on,” Nunez continued.

Is Alabama football’s battle for the punter position over?

A leg injury barred Aspurahov from participating in spring practice, but Nunez said his recovery is “really ahead of schedule,” and his ability to bounce back and hard work have surprised “everybody in the building.”

Nunez didn’t know whether Aspurahov would be able to kick entering preseason camp. However, the 6-foot-3, 200 pound three-star recruit has done just as many reps as the other guys, and Nunez said he’s seen the pop and the talent that made the Fresno, California, native one of the top punters in the 2025 recruiting class.
