IMG Academy has a new head coach, and plenty of transfers ready to make an impact.
But as much as things change for the Ascenders, there’s a lot that stays the same. Namely, the expectation of a national championship.
New head coach Greg Studrawa is ready to take advantage of his treasure trove of talent, and understands the standard of winning that comes along with all the great resources and players available to him at IMG.
“Here’s my take, because I recruited here in the places I coached,” he said. “And the difference is that there’s a lot of great high schools out there across the country that love their football programs. But there’s only one that’s exceptional in my mind, and it’s here.”
Studrawa emphasized how unique this program was at the high school level to anything else he had seen in his two decades as a college coach, including stints at Ohio State and LSU.
From the on-site resources, to the staff, even the quality of food, he expects IMG’s advantages to contribute to winning. But before any of the shiny toys come the players for Studrawa. He says putting his athletes in positions of leadership is crucial, and great programs are built on the voices of their players.
“I’ve been fortunate to be on some really good (teams), and those teams that I’ve been on, the culture was led by the players,” he said. “It wasn’t a coach-led team. If a coach leads the team, you’re probably going to be okay — you’re not going to be great. That’s my experience in 36 years.”
