While it’s common for a team to have two players named to a watch list for a single position, it’s not when you have three which is exactly what happened to Notre Dame on Tuesday.
The Doak Walker Award named a trio of Irish backs to their watch list as Jeremiyah Love, Jadarian Price and Aneyas Williams were all included. The recognition for the three shows everyone that Notre Dame has one of the deepest running back rooms in the country, and has an argument for the best as well.
Love is coming off a season where he ran for 1,125 yards and 17 touchdowns, while Price had 746 yards and 7 scores. Williams didn’t get nearly as many touches as his teammates, but when he did, it was impressive as he averaged 6.4 yards-per-carry with two touchdowns.
We could very well be seeing two of the three go over 1,000 yards this season, with the third getting plenty of run as well. New running backs coach Ja’Juan Seider will have his hands full with doling out playing time, but it’s a great problem to have for Notre Dame.
Since the inception of this award in 1990, no Irish back has brought it back to South Bend, but there is a great possibility that it can happen this season.
