The former NFL player enters his third season with the Aggies, his second as their RBs coach and his first with his new titles as assistant head coach and general manager
New Mexico State’s staff features a man of many talents.
David Cobb wears many hats for the Aggies as their running backs coach, assistant head coach and general manager. The latter now plays an important role in college football, and it makes him work closely with Sanchez to outline the program’s recruiting and NIL strategies.
He’ll help mold NM State’s rushers, but he’ll also carefully cultivate the overall roster. Coach Tony Sanchez counts on him to do it, and his inside work is vital to the Aggies’ hopes of improving their 3-9 2024 campaign.
“(Sanchez) trusts me. He cares about my opinion,” Cobb said. “I do have different responsibilities, but (Sanchez) has done an awesome job allowing me to make mistakes and have my own ideals. And the people that I work with… they do a hell of a job making that GM role easier.”
Cobb joined the Aggies in 2023 as their director of scouting and NFL liaison under former coach Jerry Kill, his coach while he was a Minnesota player from 2011-14. Cobb then transitioned to an on-field role as Sanchez’s running backs coach once he succeeded Kill as head coach.
Cobb coached the rushing attack to 180 rushing yards per game last season, ranking third in Conference USA and guided running backs Seth McGowan and Mike Washington to second-team All-CUSA honors. He was promoted to his additional roles after the season, which came with more responsibilities on paper.
To him, though, the only major change was his titles.
