The third-year or the junior transfer? Vezza, Bentley battling to be UNH's starting QB

DURHAM — Brooks Bentley and Matt Vezza are different types of quarterbacks who are in the same situation.

Both University of New Hampshire signal-callers are inexperienced at the NCAA Division I FCS level and battling the other to become the Wildcats’ starter.

At media day on Wednesday at Wildcat Stadium, fourth-year UNH head football coach Rick Santos called it the most important training camp position battle.

“Both add a different element,” Santos said. “Matty’s extremely athletic and can do some things with his legs. Brooks does a phenomenal job seeing the field, getting the ball out of his hands. He can throw it all over. They’re both really good players in their own right.

“I don’t think we’re ready to name a starter anytime soon. Probably go into the first week and expect both those guys to play.”

UNH, which began training camp on Sunday, will open its season at North Carolina Central on Saturday, Aug. 30.

Bentley, who transferred to UNH this year after two seasons at Division II Wingate University, missed the end of spring practices with a right-ankle injury that’s now fully healed.

Vezza, who has played in five games over two seasons with the Wildcats, went 13 of 25 passing for 194 yards and two touchdowns in UNH’s spring game.

“They’ve both been doing a really good job,” said first-year UNH quarterbacks coach Tommy Herion, who also played the position for the Wildcats. “Obviously, with Vezza, he’s been here a couple years so he’s probably got a little bit better of a grasp on what we’re trying to do offensively. Brooks has done a really good job catching up throughout spring ball and he’s kind of taken a jump over summer and fall camp understanding what we want to do on offense and kind of assimilating himself into our system.”
