Fresno State football has a new starting quarterback. Meet EJ Warner

Strathmore football’s watermelon run

The annual Watermelon Run, a conditioning relay race, is a Strathmore High School football fall camp tradition.

Fresno State football has a new starting quarterback.

New Bulldogs head football coach Matt Entz named E.J. Warner as the team’s starting quarterback on Monday, Aug. 11.

Warner beat out Clovis native Jayden Mandal and Sacramento State transfer Carson Conklin in the three-man race.

“I don’t want E.J. to get comfortable,” Entz told reporters at practice on Aug. 11. “That’s the last thing I want. That’s the last thing this program needs right now is someone at the quarterback position thinking they’re owed something. I don’t want to call it a short leash, but we’re going to be making sure he’s executing and operating at a satisfactory level as we move forward.”

Fresno State opens the 2025 season at Kansas on Aug. 23.

Here are two things to know about the new Bulldogs starting quarterback.

E.J. Warner is son of Football Hall of Famer

E.J. Warner is the son of Super Bowl champion and Pro Football Hall of Famer Kurt Warner. Like dad, he is wearing the jersey No. 13.

A college football veteran

Warner, a senior, is no stranger to college football, starting at both Rice and Temple before landing with Fresno State this offseason.

In 31 starts, Warner has passed for 8,814 yards and 69 touchdowns. He spent the 2022-23 seasons with Temple and started at Rice in 2024.
