Clemson vs South Carolina rivalry has clear pick for top in-state team

The Clemson Tigers and South Carolina Gamecocks are a staple of Rivalry Week in college football.

The rivalry between the two in-state foes, who first met in 1896, may not get the national attention of Alabama-Auburn or Michigan-Ohio State, but on the final Saturday of the regular season, Clemson and South Carolina will be writing the latest chapter in a storied rivalry. With the exception of 2020, the Tigers and Gamecocks have played every year since 1909.

With so much focus in today’s game on the College Football Playoff, few things still mean as much as beating your annual rivals. Bragging rights will always matter, and Clemson has held the bulk of those against South Carolina over the years with a lopsided 73-44-4 edge in the all-time series.

Will the Tigers earn win No. 74 over South Carolina in 2025? If you’re asking CBS Sports college football analyst David Cobb, the answer is yes.

With the 2025 season just days away, Cobb recently looked at all 50 states and set about determining the best Division I college football program in each one.

“South Carolina won the head-to-head meeting last season to claim the 2024 Palmetto State title. But this is about who will be better in 2025. The Gamecocks have some high-end star power, but Clemson is better-positioned to compete for a national championship. Rationale? See Bud Elliott’s 2025 Blue Chip Ratio.” –David Cobb, CBS Sports.

Clemson and South Carolina both enter the season ranked in the top 15 of the US LBM Coaches Poll and AP Top 25 poll. The Tigers are No. 4 in the AP poll and No. 6 in the Coaches Poll, while South Carolina is No. 13 in both. The Tigers haven’t lost at Columbia’s Williams-Brice Stadium since 2013, and they’ve won eight of the last 10 meetings overall.

Clemson and South Carolina are scheduled for a noon ET kickoff on Nov. 29. The game will be televised…
