The Iowa Hawkeyes are still getting ready for the Week 1 game of the 2025 college football season, but who said it was a crime to start looking ahead at things and guessing where this season could lead?
The college football season is a gauntlet and tests every single team in the country. The carrot at the end of the stick is postseason play. Sure, the College Football Playoff is the ultimate goal, but there is still value in bowl games outside of the 12-team playoff.
Bowl games allow seniors one more game, underclassmen a chance to get valuable practice reps, and another game to evaluate talent to springboard the program into next season. Iowa is a team that capitalizes on bowl games by using that valuable time to prepare for next year.
Not making a bowl game, which takes at least six wins, would be a shock for the Hawkeyes, who have been bowling every year since 2012. CBS Sports expects the streak to continue in 2025 as they have Iowa landing a Big 12 foe in their preseason bowl projections.
CBS Sports has the Iowa Hawkeyes drawing the Baylor Bears of the Big 12 in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl on December 26 in Phoenix, Arizona, at 3:30 p.m. CT.
The bowl would be a matchup of two teams from power conferences, the Big Ten and Big 12, that, while they would be happy to be there and want the win, would know they likely missed out on the College Football Playoff by just a game or two.
Should this preseason projection hold true over the course of the year, it would be the very first meeting between Iowa and Baylor.
