Williams Valley goes to work in scrimmage with Newport – Pottsville Republican Herald

WILLIAMSTOWN — Williams Valley head coach Stephen Sedesse appreciates that his team isn’t where they should be as it prepares for the season opener against Upper Dauphin on Friday.

There was plenty of good and plenty to work on that was shown in the Vikings annual scrimmage with Newport on Saturday morning at Viking Stadium.

The Vikings reached the PIAA 2A state playoffs a season ago and are ranked No. 7 in the Pennsylvania high school football preseason poll. They’re also seeking a third consecutive District 11 2A Championship title, defeating Schuylkill Haven each of the past two years.

“It’s a good judge to get these guys in gear and see where they’re at,” Sedesse said. “The competition going against other kids, and to see where we left off after last year, helps a lot. We have some young kids who got out there so they should have some opportunities this year too.”

Sedesse expressed the crucial position battles up to this point have been wide receiver and defensive back.

Senior quarterback Brady Shomper returns after becoming the first-ever Viking to both pass and run for 1,000-yards in a season. He’s joined in the backfield by junior fullback/linebacker Trevon Bair and sophomore running back Fletcher Thompson.

“We can be way better as a team than what we did today,” Shomper said. “We’ve got to execute our plays a lot better and once we get back into things I know we’ll be way better than we were today.”

Thompson was able to break open a few runs, including a 50-yard touchdown burst against the Newport defense.

“It’s great because I know when (Bair) has the ball, I can block for him, and when I have the ball, he can block for me,” Thompson said. “It really throws off the defense because either one of us can make a big impact and rip off big runs.”
