Rutgers Quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis has been named to the 2025 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award watch list. The award is presented every year to the nation’s top quarterback who shows the best character, scholastic, and athletic achievement. The list was released on Tuesday and consisted of the 58 quarterbacks from around the country.
Kaliakmanis is the first Scarlet Knights quarterback in a while to have the starting job for two consecutive seasons. He is also the first quarterback to throw for over 2,000 yards at Rutgers since Chris Laviano in 2015, having the most passing yards since Gary Nova wore a Knights uniform in 2014. Last season, Kaliakmanis completed 213-of-395 passes (53.9 percent) for 2,696 yards and threw 18 touchdowns.
Kaliakmanis has played in 36 games over his collegiate career, piling up 5,480 passing yards and 41 touchdowns. Last season, he played a major role in a Rutgers offense last season that averaged 28.9 points per game. Kaliakmanis became more effective the more familiar he got with the offense and his new teammates, and that showed on the field as Rutgers averaged 34 points per game in their final five games last season.
Rutgers offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca has said multiple times throughout training camp that it takes three years in his offensive system for quarterbacks to show that they truly get why plays are designed the way they are. He has also mentioned that Kaliakmanis is now at the point where he truly gets what exactly is going on. This new level of understanding should reflect in his gameplay as Rutgers expects him to take one more jump in his last season with the Knights.
