Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer shares timetable for Jam Miller’s return

Alabama football will be without running back Jam Miller for the Crimson Tide’s first three games this season, coach Kalen DeBoer indicated Friday in an interview with ESPN.

“He’s a leader for us, a quiet leader, but somebody the players all respect,” DeBoer told veteran college football reporter Chris Low. “Having that bye week, I feel good that he will be back out there. He does so many things for us at that position.”

Alabama has a bye the week before its SEC opener against Georgia on Sept. 27 at Sanford Stadium. Last Saturday, Miller suffered an upper-body injury during Alabama’s scrimmage and was ruled out for Week 1 at Florida State on Aug. 30 (2:30 p.m. CT, ABC).

Miller is Alabama’s most experienced rusher out of the backfield and led all Crimson Tide running backs last season with 668 yards and seven touchdowns on 145 carries. In three years at Alabama, he’s rushed for 1,092 yards on 219 carries.

Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb told ESPN:

“It’s going to be a little bit by committee until Jam gets back, and there’s going to be a proving ground — who can take care of the ball, who can advance the ball, take on the game plan and help us protect? I’m excited to see who’s going to come out these next few days and take over.”

Earlier in the week, Grubb offered praise for Alabama’s running back room, starting with sophomore Daniel Hill.

“Daniel Hill has done a good job providing a lot of protection, and I think he’s gotten a lot better at that with his eyes,” Grubb told reporters on Tuesday. “Super physical guy. Daniel is starting to run like the back was in the spring. Early in camp, I thought he was a bit slow to come to that.”

Grubb added that both Louisiana transfer senior Dre Washington and freshman Kevin Riley had shown good vision.
