Purdue football coach Barry Odom discusses non-conference scheduling
A lot of talk at Big Ten Media Days in Las Vegas has centered around non-conference scheduling. Purdue coach Barry Odom provided his philosophy.
WEST LAFAYETTE ― Purdue football owns its history of edge rushers with its “den of defensive ends” moniker.
Last season, Boilermaker edge rushers generated just seven sacks, five of which came from Will Heldt. Heldt is now at Clemson and the other two pass rushers who got to the quarterback are out of eligibility.
With just two returnees in the position group, a new coaching staff was forced to find a quick fix through the portal to go with the incoming freshmen.
“It’s a daily development,” Purdue defensive ends coach Jake Trump said. “When we got here, it’s just teaching them to attack off of the line of scrimmage.”
Fundamentals have to be second nature now with the Boilermakers in game week mode.

CJ Madden: The previous coaching staff put high expectations on Madden after he transferred from Georgia. After three games, Madden’s 2024 season was lost due to an injury. Now he’s back to 100%, and at 6-foot-4 and 275 pounds, he has uncanny ability to move for someone his size. Teammates voted Madden one of Purdue’s four defensive captains.
