PALM BEACH GARDENS — Atlantic High football coach Jamelle Murray knew he had the makings of an offensive juggernaut.
There was only one burning question: Could the Eagles find a capable replacement for four-year starting quarterback Lincoln Graf?
Murray handed the keys to the offense to Pedro Martinez, a relatively untested sophomore who served his apprenticeship under Graf last season. And if the season opener against Palm Beach Gardens on Aug. 22 was any indication, Martinez will stay in the driver’s seat for the next three years.
Martinez passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more to lead the Eagles to a 49-19 victory over the outmanned Gators. Making full use of his multiple weapons, he directed an attack that rolled up more than 400 yards, split fairly evenly between rushing and passing.
“He’s a guy that we believe in, have a lot of faith in, and we’re going to continue to push to be better,” Murray said. “He had a great season last year learning behind Lincoln — maybe not as many reps, but the conversations and the practices and the film rooms that he had with Lincoln pushed him to this…
