The Oklahoma Sooners are a week away from the beginning of their 2025 season. OU will kick things off against Illinois State on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. in Norman.
A long, winding offseason has finally come to a close in the world of college football, and the Sooners look a lot different than they did a year ago. Many think that an improved OU squad is taking the field this fall.
Count USA TODAY Sports’ Paul Myerberg and Jim Sergent among the Oklahoma believers. On Thursday, they released their schedule predictions for all 136 teams that will be competing at the FBS level for the 2025 season. They think that a big jump up the standings is coming for the Sooners.
Myerberg and Sergent have OU going 9-3 overall this regular season. They also picked the Sooners to go 5-3 in the SEC, which would put them in a three-way tie for fifth in the conference standings with Tennessee and Texas A&M. That trio of schools ranked below Texas, Georgia, Alabama and LSU.
To put it mildly, a 9-3 record against one of the toughest schedules in the nation would be massive for Oklahoma in 2025. With all of the quality opponents they’ll face, nine wins would take head coach Brent Venables off the hot seat heading into 2026.
Additionally, a 9-3 record might just be good enough for a spot in the 12-team College Football Playoff. Again, considering that impossibly difficult schedule, the Sooners would have four to six high-quality wins.
However, Oklahoma can’t get ahead of itself. The Sooners won’t have the luxury of looking past any opponent, especially those in the SEC. The folks in charge at OU believe they’ve positioned the program for consistent and excellent present and future success in Norman with the moves that were made this offseason. We’re about to find out if they’re right or not.
