Oklahoma State football stock report: Xavier Ross rising as Cowboys replace Collin Oliver

STILLWATER — Linebacker Collin Oliver wasn’t on the field during Oklahoma State’s 45-10 win at Tulsa on Saturday, but he was in the minds of his teammates.

Oliver was injured a week earlier against Arkansas, suffering a broken foot that will cause him to miss most, if not the remainder, of the season.

So when OSU receiver Brennan Presley scored a touchdown in the first quarter at Tulsa, he immediately responded with Oliver’s well-known  “share the wealth” sack celebration in which he would mimic throwing money into the air.

“I told (Oliver) to watch out for it,” Presley said. “I was just thinking about him. It’s a sad thing that happened to him, so I just wanted to show my love to him and how much he means to us.”

A few other players, like cornerback Cam Smith, celebrated big plays in the same way.

Unfortunately, replicating Oliver’s sack celebration won’t help improve the pass rush, which is the biggest impact of Oliver’s absence as No. 14 OSU enters this week’s game against No. 10 Utah at 3 p.m. Saturday at Boone Pickens Stadium.

Yet on Saturday, it was evident that a better pass rush will be a group effort, and it was super-senior Xavier Ross who turned in one of his most productive games to lead the way.

Ross has played just about every position on the defensive line in his career, with his combination of strength and quickness.

He led the defensive line in tackles with three on Saturday, combining with Jaleel Johnson on one of OSU’s two quarterback sacks.
