WPIAL football playoffs Week 3: What to know for Beaver Valley teams

The teams left in the WPIAL football playoff field in the Beaver Valley have been cut down to two, as Central Valley and Ellwood City look to punch tickets to Acrisure Stadium this week, in the third week of the playoffs.

Let’s take a look at the two semifinal matchups featuring area teams this week:

Class 3A: No. 2 Central Valley vs. No. 3 Elizabeth Forward

7 p.m. at. Montour High School

After a challenging non-conference schedule throughout the 2024 season, Central Valley had the chance to recharge during the bye week in the first round of the playoffs, and it showed in the Warriors’ quarterfinal matchup at Sarge Alberts Stadium last week against Freeport.

Central Valley rolled past the Yellowjackets 35-7 thanks to a heavy dose of the run game, and head coach Mark Lyons picked up his 150th win. As a team, the Warriors rushed for 323 yards with the running back duo of Mason Dixon and Jance Henry rushing for 297 yards and combining for four touchdowns.

Dixon, the senior back rushed 14 times for 195 yards and two scores while Henry rushed 13 times for 102 yards reaching the end zone twice.

Steven Rutherford rushed for the other Central Valley score on a 7-yard run in the third quarter while also going 4-for-6 through the air.

The Warriors will face Elizabeth Forward in the postseason for the first time since 2021 when Central Valley punched its ticket to the WPIAL Class 3A Championship with a 51-0 win.

This season, Elizabeth Forward has put together a strong season posting a record of 8-3 overall and finishing with the best record in Interstate Conference play with a perfect 5-0 record.
