More details emerged Tuesday regarding the Michigan sign-stealing fiasco, with the Wolverines set to fight the NCAA over the severity of the violations, according to documents obtained by Yahoo Sports.
Previous reports had swirled, however, that Ohio State may have somehow played a role in tipping the NCAA to the Wolverines’ sign-stealing scandal. According to Michigan’s letter to the NCAA, it was actually an unnamed source from within the Wolverines’ own campus who tipped the organization.

Online rumors had previously suggested that private investigators linked to Ohio State coach Ryan Day were looking into Michigan. According to the program’s response to the NCAA, however, those rumors proved to be a false narrative.
The NCAA has yet to disclose the identity of the tipster, though according to documents the source “appears to have worked at the school.” Michigan believes the source was used to produce some of the Wolverines’ violations, according to the document, and even argues that the accusations against it are not actionable without the NCAA revealing its source’s identity.
Per Yahoo Sports:
“While the school respects the secrecy of confidential sources, it says in the document, the NCAA can present evidence and infractions based only on ‘information that can be attributed to individuals who are willing to be identified.'”
