Wisconsin football’s 2025 season will largely be defined by the play of its high-profile veteran transfer additions.
Those players will occupy some of the most important positions in the lineup, including quarterback, defensive line, pass-rusher, tight end and wide receiver. In some cases, they’ll be specifically tasked with reversing several years of poor play at their respective position.

That similar lens can be applied to Wisconsin’s struggles over the past two seasons. The program’s 2023 offseason, aside from the hires of Luke Fickell, Phil Longo and an entirely new coaching staff, was defined by a new-look quarterback room. That group was a combination of inconsistent and injured during the season, as Wisconsin went 7-6 against a relatively easy schedule.
2024 was a similar story. Wisconsin brought in veteran quarterback Tyler Van Dyke to reverse the program’s years of struggles at the position. Van Dyke tore his ACL in the team’s Week 3 loss to Alabama. Backup Braedyn Locke was, at best, inconsistent through the remainder of the year.
Maryland transfer Billy Edwards Jr. now takes over under center entering 2025. He’ll be surrounded by several high-profile transfers, headlined by Ball State tight end Tanner Koziol and Idaho wide receiver Mark Hamper. Those players will be the most important force behind the success, or lack thereof, of Jeff Grimes’ offense in its first year with the program.
Earlier this week, we looked at several Wisconsin underclassmen who were poised for breakout seasons. Now, it’s time to apply the same sentiment to Wisconsin’s veteran corps:
