The recruiting landscape has definitely changed. Sure personal relationships with coaches still matter. But these days it’s cash that wins the day. A “straight-up better NIL package” is why 5-star DL recruit Justus Terry says he signed with Texas.
Terry was one of the last recruits to commit to Texas during the Early Signing Period and is seen as a huge get for Steve Sarkisian and his staff. Terry is the reason the Longhorns moved into the top spot on the team rankings for every recruiting service. “The late surge made by the Longhorns in the recruitment of Terry was one of the biggest upsets of this recruiting cycle,” Rivals analyst Adam Friedman said after declaring Texas the No. 1 team for 2025.
The Manchester High School standout is a 6-foot-5, 275-pound athlete that’s on the 247Sports’ 2025 Freaks List, showcasing his exceptional athleticism and versatility. He came in at No. 9 Nationally and No. 2 for defensive linemen. He is No. 3 ranked prospect in the state of Georgia according to the 247 Sports Composite.
Terry, a Georgia native, has been recruited by Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart and his staff since he was in middle school. He had also committed to Georgia during his recruiting cycle. But when it came time to sign, Terry shocked the recruiting world and headed to Austin.
A late NIL push was suspected, but now Terry has confirmed it in a conversation with On3.com’s Chad Simmons. “I don’t know how else to say it — just a straight-up better NIL package,” Terry told Simmons.
Regardless, Terry is now enrolled on campus in Austin and should have an immediate impact next fall. Certainly the Nov. 15 trip to Athens will have a little more juice.
One thing Sark might need to worry about is making sure they keep Terry happy with his NIL package for the next few years.
