Prince Avenue Christian football coach Greg Vandagriff resigns; Jon Richt to take over

Long-time Prince Avenue Christian football coach Greg Vandagriff has resigned.

The school’s athletic director Richard Ricketts said he did not know the whole story, but that Vandagriff came to them last week and handed in a letter of resignation. They sent out a release to the Prince community Monday morning.

Vandagriff said the decision was made because he has “other irons in the fire.”

In fact, he just published his first book, Power of the Patch, which is eight stories in one about his struggles growing up in a broken household, being unprepared to be a dad when the time came and finding the courage to figure it out so he could be the one his kids deserved, the one he needed as a kid himself. He has a few other writing projects in the works, too.

“They probably figure I have a bunch of coloring pictures in there as a football coach, so don’t be disappointed,” Vandagriff joked. “Who knew a football coach could write a book, right?”

Now, Vandagriff isn’t completely done with football.

“I’ll see if anybody knocks on the door,” Vandagriff said. “See what happens. I always enjoy doing it, and for the right spot, I would obviously do it again, but we’ll take it a day at a time.”

Vandagriff spent nine years with the Wolverines, going 107-15 in that time and collecting six region titles and three state titles. He ended his career as state runner-up in the 2024 GHSA 1-3A Private football championships.

He coached one of the best quarterbacks the state of Georgia has ever seen in Aaron Philo. Philo plays for Georgia Tech and was a part of the 2020 and 2023 state championship teams Vandagriff coached.
