Former Auburn running back Kerryon Johnson to coach RBs at East Tennessee State

On Tuesday night, former Auburn running back Kerryon Johnson announced on his X account (formerly Twitter) that he would join the coaching staff at East Tennessee State. He will be joining the program as their new running backs coach. He served as the director of player development for the last two seasons at North Alabama. The Buccaneers were 7-5 last season in the Southern Conference and tied for third place with a 5-3 conference record.

Johnson is remembered for his great season in 2017. The Tigers were 10-4 that season with wins at home over Alabama and Georgia when both schools were ranked number one. Unfortunately, the Tigers lost the rematch against the Bulldogs in the SEC Championship Game. Had the Tigers won that game, they would have been the first two-loss team to reach the College Football Playoff. They went on to lose to the UCF Knights in the Peach Bowl.

For Johnson, he rushed for 1,391 yards and 18 touchdowns to lead the Tigers. He led the SEC in rushing yards and finished second in touchdowns. In the Iron Bowl, Johnson rushed for 104 yards and one touchdown. In the regular season victory over Georgia, Johnson had 167 yards. Johnson suffered an injury in the Iron Bowl win that hampered his ability to be effective against Georgia in the second meeting. Johnson rushed for 2,494 yards in his three years at Auburn and scored 32 touchdowns.

He was drafted in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions. His most productive season was his rookie year with 641 yards and three touchdowns. His numbers dropped the following season with 403 yards and three touchdowns. Over his three seasons with the Lions, he rushed for 1,225 yards and eight touchdowns.
