Auburn freshman Deuce Knight signed with Auburn hoping to see the field as a young player. Will he get the chance to break through this season?
In his breakdown of ESPN 300 quarterbacks, ESPN’s senior recruiting analyst Tom Luginbill takes a crack at predicting if the four-star signee will see the field as a true freshman.
Luginbill says that Knight possesses two skill sets that Auburn quarterbacks have lacked under Hugh Freeze’s leadership: dynamic running and improvising. Luginbill also cites Auburn’s offensive success when a mobile quarterback leads the offense.
What does that mean for Knight’s chances to play this season? Luginbill says that Auburn’s transfer portal haul may provide Knight with the chance to develop before fully taking the reigns of the offense.
Knight is a tall and lanky athlete but also a bit raw, so he could face a tougher learning curve. He’s likely to provide support behind Oklahoma transfer Jackson Arnold while he’s brought along slowly.
Auburn’s quarterback room is completely rebuilt from the 2024 season. In addition to the graduation of Payton Thorne, Hank Brown and Walker White have transferred to Iowa and Baylor respectively. Hugh Freeze added former Gatorade Player of the Year Jackson Arnold from Oklahoma and Ashton Daniels from Stanford from the transfer portal. Arnold and Daniels bring Power Five starting experience to the Plains, which will aid Knight’s development.
Auburn’s quarterback battle will headline the spring practice period, set to begin on March 25. Auburn will conclude spring practice on Saturday, April 12, with its annual A-Day game.
