Brian Kelly, LSU football needed continuity at DL coaching role. Kyle Williams made sense

BATON ROUGE — Brian Kelly first met Kyle Williams years back at the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament, the annual PGA Tour event held in Lake Tahoe every summer.

The softness of Williams’ hands in his short game on the course first stuck out to Kelly.

“His short game’s ridiculous. A D-lineman with hands like that? He’s good,” Kelly joked with reporters following LSU’s third spring football practice Tuesday morning.

LSU football officially announced the hiring of Williams as its next defensive line coach Tuesday. The Daily Advertiser reported the news of Williams’ hiring last week.

Williams, who will handle LSU’s interior defensive line, was seen on the practice fields with LSU during the media viewing period Tuesday morning.

Kelly said Williams’ attention to the finer points of playing defensive tackle and how well he communicates those points to his players has stood out to him through the first couple of days that the new position coach has been on the field with the team.

“He recently has played the position. He understands the nuisances and can articulate that effectively to those that need to go play it now for LSU. That connection is very apparent to me,” Kelly said. “I got a chance today to spend about 10-15 minutes just listening to him and the way he connects with the players, I know he’s going to make a great impact for us.”

Williams came to LSU from his high school alma mater Ruston High School, where he won a state championship a couple of seasons ago on staff as defensive coordinator. His return to LSU, where he starred at defensive tackle from 2002-05, has…
