McMullin named head coach for Villains

Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School announced on Thursday that a coach with a record of success in Delaware will be the new head football coach and assistant athletic director.

Avery McMullin, most recently with Thomas McKean High School near Wilmington, Delaware, succeeds Mark Holcomb, who has taken a job as a director of football operations at Wake Forest University.

Despite his extensive background and history in Delaware, McMullin said that North Carolina had been on his radar screen for an eventual move.

“Through conversations with (Bishop Athletic Director) Jeff Stoller and the principal, Claire Willis, I felt like it was a really good fit. My fiancee and I had been vacationing in North Carolina for several years and we fell in love with the state. I was just waiting for an opportunity to jump over here. She was extremely supportive of the decision, and it was something we had talked about.”

He called Bishop McGuinness a great opportunity.

“It matched everything I wanted in a school and an administration. It felt like a program where I could grow it and keep it on the right track. I am looking forward to following in Coach Holcomb’s footsteps. We just want to continue on with that success. We want to win a conference title and hopefully a state championship. The goal is to work on the process. We want to teach students the right way and put out a great team,” McMillan said.

McMullin graduated from and played quarterback for Smyrna High School in Smyrna, Delaware. He played football for Delaware State University and then at the junior college level at Foothill College, where he was a team captain.

McMullin started his coaching career at First State Military Academy in Clayton, Delaware, where he was an assistant varsity and head JV football coach from 2017 to 2020. He then took the head coaching job at…
