They’re called ‘bold predictions’ because they are unlikely to come true. But they’re also just plausible enough that it shouldn’t be shocking if they do. And on that front, the Oklahoma Sooners should feel good about its potential in 2025. Ranked outside the US LBM Coaches Poll to start the season, the Sooners enter the year with something to prove.
Ari Wasserman of On3 Sports released his 10 bold predictions for the college football season this week, and the Sooners came out looking good. Wasserman picked OU to make the College Football Playoff. Wasserman called Oklahoma the “most undervalued team in the country heading into the season.”
Oklahoma has gone 6-7 in two of coach Brent Venables’ three seasons, including in 2024. Injuries were a big reason for last year’s struggles, but Wasserman wrote that too many are focused just on the record. With the addition of quarterback John Mateer, running back Jaydn Ott, and new offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle, it’s hard to envision the Sooners’ offense finishing 113th in total offense again.
“We’ve all gotten so hyper-focused on how bad they were a year ago, fixating on things that have no application when analyzing this year,” Wasserman wrote.
The new-look offense will almost certainly improve last year’s numbers. The team likely won’t experience the rash of injuries that plagued the offense last year. Mateer is on several preseason award watch lists, and even if Ott doesn’t replicate his first-team All-Pac 12 numbers from two seasons ago, the Sooners return their top three rushers from last year, too.
OU will open its season on August 30 at home against FCS Illinois State.
