Texas A&M’s spring football season entered its final week before Saturday’s annual Maroon & White spring game, and compared to last offseason, coach Mike Elko and his staff have kept it vanilla this spring. Regarding what fans should expect to see on Saturday, the second-year head coach made it clear that any changes on defense won’t be seen.
“If there is anything that’s different, that will stay in the office. What happens Saturday will be very similar to what everybody saw last year.”
While Texas A&M’s offense has been under the radar after quarterback Marcel Reed was named the full-time starter, the redshirt sophomore will have plenty to work, starting with the veteran offensive line in front of him, bring over 3,400 snaps to the table. At the same time, the revamped wide receiver room combined with a loaded running back rotation should lead to improvement.
Defensively, several of the Aggies’ five losses last season were primarily due to poor defense, ranging from a lack of reliable pass rush to allowing explosive plays in the secondary. Still, according to one of Texas A&M’s three team captains, junior linebacker Taurean York, the Temple (TX) native had nothing but positive things to say about the defense’s improvement this spring.
“We’re going to be good on defense. We’ve fine-tuned some things.”
“I like where we’re trending right now.”
“Fine-tuned” is the term to focus on here, as new defensive assistant Lyle Hemphill, James Madison’s defensive coordinator last season, was brought in to help fix the technical issues, especially at linebacker, cornerback, and safety.
