When Shaun Alexander announced that the Seattle Seahawks were selecting Alabama football quarterback Jalen Milroe in the third round of the 2025 NFL draft, Nick Saban could not hold his emotions in check.
The former Crimson Tide coach, who coached Milroe in three of his four seasons at Alabama and is now covering the NFL draft on ABC, applauded and shook his head. And with tears in his eyes, Saban broke down what the Seahawks were getting.
“He’s gonna give the Seahawks an element of offense that nobody else in this draft can give anybody.”

“I tell you, he’s going to give the Seahawks an element of offense that nobody in this draft can get of anybody,” Saban said. “Because this guy’s fast, explosive. Look, he can throw the ball. He’s a great deep-ball thrower. He’s got a strong arm. He just needs a little refinement and consistency in the passing game and he can be an outstanding player.”
In Milroe’s one season as Saban’s starting quarterback, he placed sixth in the Heisman Trophy race, finishing with 2,834 passing yards, 531 rushing yards and 35 total touchdowns with six interceptions. Milroe led the Crimson Tide to an SEC championship and a College Football Playoff berth.
Milroe had a bumpier 2024 with 2,844 passing yards, 726 rushing yards and 36 total touchdowns, but threw 11 interceptions and led Alabama to its worst record since 2007.
Milroe is the first Alabama quarterback to be selected outside of the first round of the NFL draft since A.J. McCarron was a fifth-round pick by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2015.
