Stats and takeaways from Memphis’ spring game, including QB competition

Memphis football spring practices are in the books.

The Tigers held their spring game on April 26 at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium. It was the first time for Memphis fans to see the Tigers’ new players ahead of the 2025 season, and they competed in a modified scrimmage.

The top storyline throughout the spring has been the quarterback competition between Brendon Lewis, A.J. Hill and Arrington Maiden. All three are battling to replace Seth Henigan, who started for the Tigers from 2021-2024. All three played on Saturday, but Lewis and Hill were on the same team.

That meant Maiden had plenty of opportunity to shine, and he did. His gray team won the game 14-3, with Maiden throwing two long touchdown passes to help his team get the win.

Here are a few takeaways from the game.

Arrington Maiden stars for his team

Maiden, a redshirt freshman, had by far the most opportunities of any quarterback because he was the only signal-caller on his team. After an early interception on a botched screen play, Maiden settled in and routinely led long drives for his team.

He was also the only quarterback to throw a touchdown. First, he hit tight end Christian Ross for a 40-yard score that gave his team the lead. He followed that up with a 60-yard bomb to Purdue transfer C.J. Smith, who ran away from the blue team defense for another score.

Maiden is the only quarterback in the competition who was with the Tigers last season.
