Will Bill Belichick succeed leading the UNC football program?
Bill Belichick has had a historic coaching career that will now continue at the college level with the North Carolina Tar Heels.
Coaching at a new level for the first time can be challenging, but not for Belichick, who is already proving himself again through transfer portal adds and national media attention.
Despite Belichick’s extensive success in the NFL, we still don’t know how he’ll perform leading a college football program. In USA TODAY Sports’ 2025 ACC Football coach rankings, Belichick slotted in at 10th amongst 17 coaches – sandwiched between Duke’s Manny Diaz (ninth) and Syracuse’s Fran Brown (11th).
“North Carolina made one of the most interesting hires in college football history, when it tapped a coach with six Super Bowl titles, to elevate a program that enjoys enough advantages to take a step up the food chain,” Blake Toppmeyer wrote. “We know Belichick, 73, can coach. Can he thrive in modern college football? That’s anyone’s guess. Running a college program differs from coaching pro ball. If you’re monitoring early indicators, UNC amassed a nice batch of transfers.”
Belichick’s first game coaching the Tar Heels will be Monday, September 1 at 7:30 p.m. against TCU under the Kenan Stadium lights. This is just one of 12 games North Carolina is scheduled to play in, but a great early-season indicator of Belichick’s ability to coach college football.
