Over the past 15 years, Clemson has been one of the most successful college football programs in the country. It all started in 2011 when the Tigers completed their first 10-win season since 1990. And at the helm of the offense in 2011 was Chad Morris. While his time with the Tigers ended on a positive note, his career quickly soured, becoming known as one of the worst college football hires in recent memory.
CBS Sports created a list of the 15 worst head coaching hires in the last decade, and Morris comes in at No. 1. And to be fair, CBS may have a point.
Former Clemson assistant Chad Morris ranks worst head coaching hire in the last decade
After leaving the Tigers, Morris spent three seasons with SMU, building his resume in the American Athletic Conference before getting his big break in the SEC. The Arkansas Razorbacks hired Morris after firing current Illinois HC Brett Bielema.
Morris led the Hogs to a 0-14 conference and 4-18 overall records. In addition to the horrible records, he managed to lose to FCS competitors Colorado State, North Texas, San Jose St., and Western Kentucky in less than two seasons in Fayetteville, turning Arkansas into the laughing stock of the SEC which was a legitimate nation championship contender only six years before his arrival.
Since his disgraceful dismissal, Morris has hopped between five schools in as many years, even dropping to the high school ranks in 2021 and rejoining Dabo Swinney at Clemson in 2023 as an offensive analyst. Currently, Morris has stepped away from the game to watch his son Chandler Morris’ final season of college football. He is working as the senior adviser to the CEO of ANSRS, an Austin-based football data management company.
