The Big Ten Conference has been home to lots of incredibly talented players over the past 25 years. Every school has had plenty of high level recruits walk in the door and seen some of them turn into stars and others not pan out. But which recruits had the most buzz around them before arriving on campus?
Today, I’m going to look at the highest-rated recruit for every Big Ten football program since 2000, according to 247Sports. Did that player turn into a star? Transfer? Or completely flame out? Let’s take a deeper dive into the best recruits in Big Ten football history.
Illinois: Arrelious Benn, Five Star WR in the Class of 2007
College Stats: Three years at Illinois (2007-2009)- 159 receptions, 2,221 yards and 7 touchdowns
Arrelious Benn is the highest rated recruit for the Illini since 2000, coming in at a 0.9937 rating on 247Sports. He played three seasons in Champaign, posting decent numbers including a career best 1,055 yards in 2008. He was a 2nd round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2010 and played five seasons in the NFL, putting up a combined 65 receptions for 990 yards and six touchdowns.
Indiana: Dasan McCullough, Four Star LB in the Class of 2022
College Stats: One year at Indiana and two years at Oklahoma (2022-2024)- 96 tackles, 14 TFL, 4 sacks
Dasan McCullough came into Bloomington as the highest rated recruit, with a 0.9701 rating on 247Sports, but didn’t last long with the Hoosiers. After putting up 49 tackles, seven TFL’s and four sacks his freshman year, McCullough transferred to Oklahoma, where he’s seen a dip in playing time. In two years with the Sooners, he’s posted a combined 47 tackles, seven TFL’s and no sacks. He’s now made a return to the Big Ten, transferring to Nebraska for his senior season.
