Quarterback CJ Montes reversed his decision to transfer to Florida A&M, opting to return to Kent State.Montes had a successful 2023 season at Fordham before a season-ending injury in 2024.FAMU’s quarterback roster now includes Traven Green, Tyler Jefferson, Bryson Martin, Roman Purcell, and RJ Mayes.The Rattlers’ 2025 season opener is against Howard University in the Orange Blossom Classic.
CJ Montes isn’t coming to The Highest of Seven Hills after all.
On Thursday, May 8, Zach McKinnell, Senior Editor and Owner of Sports Illustrated’s FCS Football Central, reported that the transfer quarterback isn’t transferring to Florida A&M football.
Montes initially announced his commitment to the Rattlers on Sunday, April 27.
Instead, Montes will rejoin the Football Bowl Subdivision’s Kent State, whom he practiced this spring after transferring from Fordham, a Football Championship Subdivision program. Montes also played for New Mexico during his freshman season in 2021-2022.

In 2023, Montes starred for the Fordham Rams, completing 64 percent of his passes for 2,997 yards, 26 touchdowns against just one interception. Montes garnered All-Patriot League Second Team honors for his performance and was a Walter Payton Award Finalist.
Montes played just three games, all starts, for Fordham in 2024, before suffering a season-ending lower-body injury.
