When Kyron Drones and Pop Watson declared their intentions to remain at Virginia Tech after the 2024 season, the Hokies appeared set at quarterback. Additionally, the Hokies received commitments from a pair of talented dual-threat quarterbacks, A.J. Brand and Kelden Ryan, both of whom enrolled in January.
However, on Wednesday, Virginia Tech surprised everyone by taking a commitment from former Oklahoma State quarterback Garret Rangel. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Rangel is a native of Frisco, Texas. A former four-star recruit, Rangel spent three seasons with the Cowboys, redshirting in his first season (2022).
Here’s a look at Rangel’s numbers each year:
2022: Four games played, 59/115 (51.3%), 711 passing yards, four touchdowns, five interceptions
2023: Five games played, 17/32 (53.1%), 172 passing yards, two touchdowns, one interception
2024: Four games played, 17/33 (51.5%), 192 passing yards, two touchdowns, one interception
Rangel entered the transfer portal after spring practice and has a prior relationship with Virginia Tech offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery, who recruited him while he was head coach at Tulsa.
So, where does Rangel figure into Virginia Tech’s plans in 2025? He was not signed to start. Drones is the unquestioned starter, as long as he’s healthy. Drones battled numerous injuries last season and recently underwent a medical procedure. Head coach Brent Pry said he’d be ready in plenty of time for fall camp.
Rangel will battle Watson for the backup job. Watson has two career starts, both coming in the final two games last season. He was outstanding in the regular-season finale vs. Virginia, completing 14 of 21 passes for 254 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed for 48 yards and a touchdown.
